A Message from Digital Promise and Verizon
Message from Karen Cator, President and CEO of Digital Promise
At Digital Promise, we are focused on improving the opportunity to learn and identifying all the ways that the power of technology and research can best support teachers and students. In short, we are working to close the Digital Learning Gap. Our primary goal with this project is to support the work of courageous and innovative leaders, educators, and students as they design and implement innovative, technology-enabled learning environments.
The goal of this website is to tell the stories of the particular challenges, victories, and lessons learned throughout their transformation process, from digital readiness to implementation and evaluation. Educators and students in these schools are experimenting with new ways to learn using “always available” devices, giving them access to a wealth of content and resources as well as research, productivity, and creativity tools. If we can share the everyday experiences, then others can follow along and benefit from their work.
We are grateful to the Verizon Foundation and Verizon Wireless for supporting our work with the schools. We hope the stories and resources on this site serve as both a source of inspiration and a practical guide for schools as they embark on their own digital transformation journey.
Message from Rose Kirk, President of the Verizon Foundation
At Verizon, we believe that technology can solve the world’s most pressing problems precisely because it connects people and resources in new combinations that are transforming our society and providing powerful answers to the big challenges of our day. We partner with committed, dynamic non-profit organizations, combining their unique expertise with our advanced technology and financial resources to achieve important breakthroughs.
Verizon’s education programs focus on improving student engagement and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), with particular emphasis on underserved communities. We recognize that creating individualized instruction is the way to cultivate achievement, and we want to ensure that our students have access to greater opportunities and the support they need to nurture success in STEM and beyond.
We have seen that mobile technology – when paired with professional development for teachers on effective integration– is an incredibly powerful tool to foster individualized learning environments and higher achievement. The initial, promising results of Verizon Innovative Learning schools show that students at participating schools have stronger gains in mathematics and science than students from schools not involved with the program.
Through our work with Digital Promise in middle schools and by creating the opportunity to share our educators’ best practices far and wide though this resource – we aim to make meaningful progress toward the goal of closing the learning gap for students across the United States.
